Xi Siyan was delayed for quite some time on his way back to class.
The reason?
As he stepped out of the office building, he happened to run into a group from the Education Bureau, who had arrived unannounced for an inspection.
A cluster of school leaders accompanied them, engaging in polite small talk.
While discussing the teaching faculty and campus environment, the logistics director, responsible for school investments, eagerly stepped forward and said,
“Our No. 1 Middle School was fortunate to receive financial support last year for campus reconstruction and faculty expansion. As a key middle school in Suicheng, our annual enrollment and admission rates have consistently risen.”
The Education Bureau official responded with a typical, bureaucratic tone,
“Support for education is a privilege granted by society. But our goal is not just academic achievement—we must also ensure students develop morally, intellectually, physically, and aesthetically.”
“Absolutely, absolutely,” the surrounding leaders nodded in agreement.
Just as the discussion continued, someone noticed Xi Siyan.
The school leaders’ expressions immediately brightened.
Finally, Director Lai, the second-grade director, waved him over and introduced him to the Education Bureau officials with enthusiasm,
“What a coincidence! This student right here is the pride of our No. 1 Middle School. A second-year experimental class student—top academic performer, excellent in all aspects.”
Despite the attention, the young man—dressed as impeccably as the school’s manicured gardens—remained unfazed.
He politely greeted the officials and calmly explained why he was outside during class.
“The Xi Family’s Nephew”
The Education Bureau leader glanced over, listening intently to the assistant beside him.
Then, as if he had suddenly remembered something, his previously formal demeanor softened into a kind smile.
“Ah, is this the Xi family’s nephew?”
“Yes, yes,” a school leader quickly replied, “Last year, when we built two new teaching buildings, it was thanks to the Xi family’s connections. This kid is low-key about it.”
The Education Bureau leader nodded approvingly, “Very good.”
As if speaking casually, he added,
“I met Jianyu last year. He mentioned having a nephew studying here at No. 1 Middle School—but he never mentioned he was this handsome.”
The Xi Family’s Second Uncle
Xi Siyan concealed the faint amusement in his eyes.
He kept a friendly expression and replied smoothly,
“My second uncle often says that most people in the education system are driven by faith. He strongly believes in the importance of education and has dedicated himself deeply to the industry.”
Of course, the truth about his second uncle, Xi Jianyu, was entirely different.
Among the Xi family, Jianyu was considered the most unambitious member.
He had barely made it through school, relying on sheer intellect to graduate from a prestigious university. With no interest in politics and no desire to enter business, he ended up stumbling into the education sector—by accident.
The time he donated an entire building to No. 1 Middle School under the Xi family name, he sat slouched on the sofa at home and scoffed,
“The Education Bureau officials are the most hypocritical bunch—always preaching virtue, but full of corruption underneath. Ah Yan, our family has nothing but money. Why waste your time as a ‘model student’? Isn’t the Xi family name enough to let you walk around school however you want?”
After that, Old Lady Xi slapped him across the head.
She adored her grandson Xi Siyan the most.
She scolded Jianyu,
“Instead of teaching your nephew good things, you’re teaching him your shameless habits? Ah Yan is such a good child—well-behaved, sensible, and considerate!”
At this, Jianyu collapsed onto the sofa dramatically and rolled his eyes,
“I swear, old lady, your eyesight must be going bad. He’s well-behaved and sensible?! He’s the most black-hearted little devil in this family!”
Then, he started listing all of Xi Siyan’s so-called ‘bad deeds’:
- At three years old, he knocked over Mr. Xi’s inkstone, then framed his own father for it. The eldest son of the Xi family, already in his thirties, almost got beaten by the old master.
- At thirteen or fourteen, when all the boys in the extended Xi family were busy falling in love, he collected their love letters into a sealed box. During a New Year’s gathering, someone ‘accidentally’ found it, and it turned into a trophy display—turning every cousin against him.
Jianyu, shaking his head, dramatically declared,
“Character reveals itself in small things! This smiling Buddha of the Xi family has been a schemer since childhood!”
A ‘Perfect’ Reputation
Despite all of this, Xi Siyan still protected his second uncle’s reputation in front of outsiders.
It was only natural—they were family, after all.
Meanwhile, one of the school leaders suggested,
“Since we’re already here, why not visit the experimental class?”
The proposal was quickly approved by the group.
One official asked,
“Si Yan, what subject is being taught right now?”
“Chinese,” Xi Siyan replied smoothly.
He added,
“Mr. Jiang is a senior teacher. He has vast knowledge, a humorous teaching style, and all the students enjoy his classes.”
The school leader nodded approvingly.
“Yes, yes. I’ve attended Teacher Jiang’s lectures before—very engaging. And since the experimental class is full of highly motivated students, the atmosphere must be excellent. Just look—”
An Unfortunate Moment
As they arrived at the back door of the classroom, the leader’s voice suddenly cut off.
Because inside the room—
A sleepy-looking student stood lazily at the back row.
And just as the officials arrived, they witnessed him saying:
“Excuse me, Teacher, but your way of reciting is really hypnotic. How about I stand outside the classroom as punishment?”
Silence. Absolute Silence.
A strange silence filled the classroom.
Even Chen Mo, who had been half-asleep, suddenly became aware of the unnatural quiet.
He blinked, his eyelids still heavy, and followed the stares of his classmates—
Until his gaze landed on—
- A school leader with a very green face.
- Director Lai, who looked like he was witnessing a disaster.
- And finally, Xi Siyan, who was so amused that he actually had to cover his face with his fist to stop himself from laughing.
“Chen Mo!”
Director Lai finally exploded, his voice sharp and full of disbelief.
“Come out!”
Chen Mo, completely unbothered, calmly pushed his stool away, stood up, and leisurely strolled outside.
Meanwhile, the other school officials—having the wisdom to read the room—immediately ushered the Education Bureau personnel elsewhere.
Now, only Director Lai, Chen Mo, and the very entertained Xi Siyan remained.
Xi Siyan looked at him and suddenly said, “Not really.”
Chen Mo blinked. “What do you mean?”
“You wouldn’t even rank as an average student in a regular class,” Xi Siyan stated matter-of-factly, his hands still casually tucked into his pockets. “I’ve seen your entrance test. You’d still be at the bottom of the experimental class.”
Chen Mo snorted. “Haven’t you heard the saying? ‘Better to be the head of a chicken than the tail of a phoenix’?”
“Do you really want to be the boss?” Xi Siyan raised a brow. “Let me remind you—no matter what class you’re in, sleeping in class openly is still not allowed.”
Director Lai immediately nodded in agreement.
“Chen Mo, don’t give up on yourself. I’ll find a way to help you catch up.”
Chen Mo nearly laughed out loud.
Give up on myself?
He just didn’t want to be in the experimental class anymore—it was annoying enough with Yang Shule around. Besides, he had plenty of money now and had even started investments that completely bypassed the Yang family.
Once he graduated from high school, he’d cut financial ties with them completely. He didn’t need to go to some prestigious university; a decent one would do just fine.
Just because he accidentally fell asleep in class didn’t mean he had “given up on himself.”
Seriously, what was wrong with this guy?
Since when did the class monitor start acting so friendly?
The Class Monitor Moves In
By third period, Chen Mo finally realized what Director Lai meant by “solving the problem.”
The homeroom teacher, Xiang Shenglong, entered the class, glanced around, and then announced:
“Xi Siyan, move next to Chen Mo.”
The entire class: “…???”
Xi Siyan himself paused mid-motion, then said flatly, “Why doesn’t he move instead?”
“You think you can block the door?” Xiang Shenglong shot back.
“You two are now the ‘guardians’ of the experimental class—one on the left, one on the right.”
Then, in an even more shameless tone, the teacher added, “Chen Mo is still adjusting. As class monitor, you should help him with his schoolwork.”
The classroom erupted in whispers.
“Be quiet!” Xiang Shenglong snapped, then started the lesson.
A Shift in Atmosphere
Chen Mo actually paid attention this time.
He took a few notes—the physics lessons in this school were decent, and he had always liked the subject.
By the time class ended, the room buzzed with excitement again.
Chen Mo immediately felt a strong gaze on him. He already knew who it was before looking.
Next to him, Xi Siyan was moving his desk into place, one-handed.
Chen Mo sat down and asked casually, “Are you taking revenge on me?”
Xi Siyan didn’t even glance up, simply continuing to arrange his books. “What do you have that’s worth my revenge?”
Chen Mo tilted his chin toward Yang Shule’s seat.
Xi Siyan followed his gaze.
Then he raised an eyebrow. “Yang Shule?”
“Who else?”
Xi Siyan finally stopped what he was doing and looked down at him.
“I remember you asking me this twice already. Why?”
Chen Mo thought back to Friday night in the car.
This time, he didn’t bother explaining.
“Given my relationship with him, isn’t that reason enough?”
Xi Siyan seemed to genuinely think about it.
Then he laughed.
“You think I like him?”
Uncomfortable Truths
Fortunately, the class was noisy, and many students had left for a bathroom break.
No one else seemed to hear their conversation.
Chen Mo, however, stared at him in shock.
He had assumed it was obvious.
At home, Yang Shule constantly mentioned Xi Siyan. Their parents encouraged their “good relationship.” Wherever Xi Siyan was in school, Yang Shule was always nearby.
Chen Mo had personally witnessed Yang Shule confessing to Xi Siyan in senior year.
Even if they hadn’t openly declared their feelings yet… shouldn’t Xi Siyan at least know whether he liked boys or girls?
Chen Mo hesitated, then considered something else.
Years later, when rumors about Xi Siyan’s sexuality surfaced, they had turned out to be true.
Could it be that… he was still in the closet at this point?
A New Distraction
Just then, a new voice cut in.
“Brother Yan!”
A young man strode over and slung an arm around Xi Siyan’s shoulder.
It was Qi Lin—one of Xi Siyan’s close friends and a well-known figure in Suicheng’s LGBTQ scene.
“This new spot isn’t bad,” Qi Lin commented. “But it’s not as hidden as before.”
Xi Siyan calmly removed his arm and said, “It’s fine.”
Then, as if sensing Chen Mo’s silent stare, he turned back and gave him a warning look.
“I know what you’re thinking. Don’t.”
Basketball Invitation
Qi Lin, completely unaware of the silent tension, grinned and changed the topic.
“Anyway, we’re one man short for basketball at lunch. You in, Chen Mo?”
Chen Mo barely reacted before saying, “No.”
Qi Lin frowned. “Why not?”
Chen Mo gave a mild smile, resting his chin on one hand.
“I’m afraid the other team will be too scared to play if I join.”
Qi Lin’s eyes lit up.
“Damn! That’s some confidence.”
But before he could get too excited—
Chen Mo simply pulled out his next class’s textbook and said indifferently,
“I’m busy at lunch. I have to move into the dorms.”
