Chapter 20: Encountering an Enemy
Private cars were convenient since they didn’t require ID verification, but they were often unreliable and late.
Pei Lang waited at the bus station for over an hour before the driver finally called—only to inform him that something urgent had come up, and he wouldn’t be able to take him.
Instead, the driver suggested finding another car.
The sky was painted with streaks of gold and orange, the sunset blending into a long, silent symphony. The willow branches swayed gently in the evening breeze, casting shifting shadows beneath the dimming light.
Pei Lang, who had been waiting for so long only to hear this news, felt his mood plummet.
Frustrated, he called the driver back, asking if he had any contacts for other drivers—after all, they all worked in the same network.
But instead of answering, the driver turned off his phone.
Tch.
Pei Lang sighed. Not the first time I’ve dealt with something like this.
After some effort, he finally managed to find another car, but the earliest departure was 8 PM—still two hours away.
It would be too late by the time he got home.
Would Yan Han be mad if I skipped his massage tonight?
Of course, that wasn’t the real issue.
The real issue was—if I go home too late, there won’t be any food left.
I didn’t tell Aunt Lin that I wouldn’t be home for dinner.
…I should eat first.
The sun dipped below the horizon, and the fading twilight struggled against the rising night before being swallowed completely by darkness.
Streetlights blinked on, casting a warm glow over the city.
The moon was particularly bright tonight, the sky filled with twinkling stars, blending with the golden lights of the bustling streets.
Pei Lang took a deep breath. Might as well treat this as a short trip.
This city had a slow-paced charm.
Even the tourists here seemed unwilling to disturb its peaceful atmosphere.
Though the streets were filled with people, there was no chaotic noise—only quiet conversations, travelers sharing stories of their day in soft, relaxed voices.
Even the restaurants had a calming, cozy vibe.
Pei Lang picked a traditional-style restaurant, requested a private room, and ordered two small dishes and a bottle of local rice wine.
After eating, he waited for a while.
Still no call from the driver.
Figuring he might as well pay the bill first, he stepped out of the private room—
And almost immediately, he ran into someone.
A man was walking toward him.
Pei Lang glanced at him briefly, noting his decent looks, before looking away.
But just as they were about to pass each other—
The man suddenly grabbed his arm.
The force was strong, the movement fast, catching Pei Lang completely off guard.
He frowned and turned his head. “What are you doing?”
The man’s eyes darkened. “Pei Lang!?”
It was Yan Xiuyuan.
Pei Lang had never met him in person before, so he didn’t recognize him immediately.
Shit.
An enemy.
Pei Lang’s mind whirred as he quickly smoothed out his expression, dropping his frown and replacing it with a harmless smile.
Pretending to know him, he said casually, “Oh, it’s you. Long time no see. What have you been up to?”
It was a normal greeting.
But Yan Xiuyuan’s eyes burned with rage.
His grip on Pei Lang’s arm tightened, fingers digging into his flesh, as if trying to break his bones.
Pei Lang immediately confirmed—Yep. Definitely an enemy.
Yan Xiuyuan never expected to find the person he had been searching for so randomly like this.
At first, he had just caught a glimpse of Pei Lang’s face.
The clothes and aura were completely different from before, so he wasn’t sure.
He had grabbed his arm on a hunch—and he was right.
His voice dripped with venom. “So this is why I couldn’t find you. You’ve been acting all well-behaved, huh? Is this your way of avoiding me?”
His handsome face twisted with anger.
“Or are you trying to get my attention by acting like this? How long are you going to pretend you don’t know me?”
Then, as if remembering something, his lips curled into a cruel sneer.
“Ziqing is here too. If you kneel down and apologize, maybe I’ll forgive you.”
His voice was filled with disdain and arrogance, like a rabid dog convinced it was a king.
Pei Lang’s smile vanished.
He grabbed Yan Xiuyuan’s wrist—
And twisted.
CRACK.
A sharp sound echoed in the hallway.
Yan Xiuyuan’s face twisted in pain, his expression turning ashen as the sharp ache of a dislocated bone hit him.
“You—!”
His free hand swung up, aiming a punch at Pei Lang’s face.
But Pei Lang shifted smoothly, dodging the attack with ease.
The punch hit empty air.
Yan Xiuyuan’s eyes flashed with shock.
“Lucky bastard—”
“Yan Xiuyuan.” Pei Lang cut him off, shaking his head as he rolled up his sleeve.
His fair skin was marked red, the shape of Yan Xiuyuan’s fingers clearly imprinted on his arm.
His expression darkened.
“Tsk. So childish.”
Yan Xiuyuan’s veins bulged with fury.
“WHAT did you just say?!”
Pei Lang sighed dramatically.
“Look at you.” His voice was calm, almost lazy.
“You don’t look like a CEO at all. You look like an angry, brainless dog, barking and biting at everything.”
“Not only do you lack intelligence, but you also have terrible aim. And you even spit when you talk.”
Yan Xiuyuan’s vision went red.
Pei Ziqing Appears
At that moment, a soft, sweet voice interrupted them.
“Brother? You’re here too? What a coincidence.”
Pei Ziqing.
Yan Xiuyuan had been gone too long, so she had come out to check—only to see Pei Lang.
Her eyes flickered with excitement.
Something good was about to happen.
Pei Lang merely gave a lazy smile and said teasingly, “Your little baby has arrived.”
Pei Ziqing smiled sweetly.
She didn’t have to pretend in front of Pei Lang, but in front of Yan Xiuyuan, she still had to maintain her innocent, kind image.
She walked over and gently tugged on Yan Xiuyuan’s sleeve.
“Xiuyuan, did my brother upset you again? Please don’t be mad…”
Yan Xiuyuan’s breathing was ragged, fists clenched tight.
“Not now, Ziqing.”
Pei Ziqing’s face fell slightly, but she kept up her act.
“But Xiuyuan—”
“I SAID NOT NOW!”
His roar echoed through the hallway.
Pei Ziqing’s eyes widened, startled.
Pei Lang?
Smirking, completely unbothered.
Pei Ziqing?
Shocked, but still playing the damsel.
And Yan Xiuyuan?
Absolutely furious, teetering on the edge of losing it completely.
Chapter 20: Encountering an Enemy (Continuation)
“Ziqing, I gave him chances, but he didn’t cherish them. He’s provoked me again and again.”
Yan Xiuyuan’s voice was cold and furious. “What kind of family are we? He’s better off not acknowledging us. I need to teach him a lesson today, or he’ll think he can do whatever he wants. He doesn’t respect me, so how can he respect you?”
His words made it clear—he had no intention of letting Pei Lang go.
Meanwhile, Pei Lang had secretly turned on his phone’s recording function.
He wasn’t sure if it would be enough to deal with Yan Xiuyuan legally, but at the very least, it would prove that Yan Xiuyuan attacked first and that Pei Lang had only acted in self-defense.
Pei Ziqing wiped at her eyes, feigning distress, but didn’t try to stop Yan Xiuyuan.
Her silence was her approval.
The restaurant corridor was quiet, with few customers at this hour.
Yan Xiuyuan swung his fist violently.
Pei Lang easily sidestepped the attack.
Then, with a teasing smile, he clapped his hands. “Wow~ What an enviable relationship. You two really are a perfect match.”
Yan Xiuyuan’s anger surged.
“Do you have a death wish?!”
His second punch also missed, and when he lashed out with a kick, Pei Lang dodged effortlessly—executing a flawless side flip.
No matter what move Yan Xiuyuan used, Pei Lang avoided it with ease.
The more Yan Xiuyuan missed, the angrier he became.
His attacks grew fiercer, but they never landed.
What made it even more infuriating was that Pei Lang continued to mock him in his usual calm, gentle voice.
“Ah~ Missed again. That punch should have gone three centimeters to the left. Don’t get discouraged! Follow my advice and try again.”
“Your legs are weak. At a time like this, they shouldn’t be weak. Did you overdo it last night?”
“A CEO like you, acting so barbaric—swinging your fists around like a gorilla. No skill, just brute force. How embarrassing.”
“You haven’t eaten yet, have you? No wonder you have no strength. Your little baby is watching—if you lose face in front of her, it’ll be a disaster. How about this? I’ll stand still and let you hit me once? Otherwise, you might never recover from the humiliation.”
“PEI LANG! I’LL TEAR YOUR MOUTH APART!”
Yan Xiuyuan’s rage exploded.
This time, he lunged at Pei Lang with everything he had.
Pei Lang almost dodged, but his footing was slightly off.
His expression shifted, and in an instant, his leg shot up, aiming a powerful kick at Yan Xiuyuan’s neck.
“STOP!”
A cold, authoritative voice cut through the air.
Pei Lang’s foot halted abruptly, stopping just one centimeter away from Yan Xiuyuan’s throat.
His eyes flickered with confusion as he turned toward the source of the voice—
Yan Han.
And standing beside him—Su Jia.
Why is Mr. Yan here?!
Pei Lang quickly retracted his foot, taking two steps back to distance himself from Yan Xiuyuan.
Then, in a rare moment of obedience, he stood quietly to the side, saying nothing.
The male protagonist had just been caught getting beaten by his uncle.
Even though their relationship wasn’t good, blood ties were still blood ties.
Pei Lang suddenly felt a bit uneasy and decided to behave himself.
Yan Xiuyuan, caught between rage and shock, hesitated before muttering, “Uncle?”
At the same time, Pei Ziqing hurried to his side, her demeanor soft and innocent. “Uncle.”
Yan Han’s face was dark, his entire aura radiating an oppressive chill.
“Come here.”
Yan Xiuyuan stepped forward slowly, but Yan Han glared at him coldly.
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
His icy gaze fell on Pei Lang instead. “Come here.”
Pei Lang’s lips curled into a smile, and he walked over obediently.
“Mr. Yan, what a coincidence.”
His tone was flattering, but inwardly, he was nervous.
Yan Han was terrifying when he was angry—even the little man on his shoulder, which usually acted cute, was now standing at strict military attention.
Not cute at all.
“I’m taking him with me.”
Yan Han’s tone was final.
Yan Xiuyuan’s face twisted with fury.
Even though he was somewhat afraid of Yan Han, that fear was now overpowered by anger.
“NO!”
His voice rose in volume, and he glared daggers at Pei Lang.
“Uncle, this is a personal grudge between him and me! Don’t interfere!”
Yan Han’s expression didn’t change.
His next words were calm, but sharp.
“If I don’t intervene, someone else will.”
Then, without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Father, your ‘good grandson’ Yan Xiuyuan just tried to attack Pei Lang. Do you want to handle this, or should I?”
Yan Xiuyuan’s face darkened, but he didn’t take the call seriously.
Until—
Two minutes later, his father called.
A furious scolding erupted from the phone.
“You irresponsible brat! Instead of managing the company, you’re out causing trouble?! Get back to the office immediately! If you don’t, forget about staying as president!”
Yan Xiuyuan’s face burned with humiliation.
In the end, he had no choice but to leave with Pei Ziqing.
But before leaving, he still shot a glare at Pei Lang and spat out, “Don’t think this is over!”
Pei Lang simply smiled and nodded politely, as if accepting the curse as a gift.
That smug, infuriating reaction made Yan Xiuyuan storm off even faster.
Peace. At last.
The world finally quieted down.
Pei Lang let out a satisfied sigh, then turned to look at Yan Han and Su Jia.
That’s when he noticed something… odd.
Su Jia’s expression was different.
Instead of his usual disdain, his eyes held a trace of… admiration.
???
Is Su Zhuzhu sick again? What’s with this admiring look?
Yan Han’s deep voice interrupted his thoughts. “Have you finished eating?”
Pei Lang blinked. “Yeah, I’ve finished.”
Neither of them mentioned what had just happened.
Yan Han’s eyes briefly flicked over Pei Lang’s slightly wrinkled shirt, but he said nothing.
Instead, his gaze deepened. “Let’s go after we finish eating.”
Then, turning to Su Jia, he ordered, “Go get the car.”
Su Jia immediately straightened. “Yes, boss.”
