Chapter 01
“Admiral Derek, you are engaged to my brother. But you asked me to meet you here privately. Isn’t that inappropriate?”
The frail, black-haired omega raised his head and looked up at the tall and handsome alpha before him with a timid expression. The delicate, white lotus-scented pheromones emanating from his body lingered between them, making it impossible for the already-distracted man to control himself.
Derek inhaled the pheromones in the air—they were incredibly sweet to him. When Tang Yiran and his fiancé, Tang Li, had unexpectedly differentiated into omegas yesterday, Derek had happened to be present with a pheromone detector in hand. To his astonishment, the detector revealed that his pheromone compatibility with the newly differentiated Tang Yiran reached an astonishing 86%!
Some AOs might go their entire lives without ever encountering a partner with such a high compatibility.
Meanwhile, Tang Li—who had been betrothed to him and was widely expected to become a high-level omega since childhood—had instead differentiated into a disabled omega with a defective pheromone gland.
Such an omega could neither secrete pheromones nor match with an alpha, much less be marked.
More importantly, he lacked the ability to stabilize an alpha during their manic phases, leaving them vulnerable to losing control.
No rational alpha would choose such an omega as a lifelong partner.
Tang Yiran suddenly realized he wasn’t wearing a suppression collar. Quickly, he reached up to cover the gland at the back of his neck, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Looking at Derek with hesitation, he whispered, “I’m sorry, Admiral Derek. Because you suddenly asked me to meet you, I rushed over and forgot…”
Midway through his sentence, he abruptly realized he had exposed something he shouldn’t have. His lips pressed together instantly, but the blush on his face only deepened.
Those emerald-green eyes—revered as the jewels of the Sen Empire by omegas across the nation—softly observed the black-haired omega, who appeared shy and delicate before him.
Derek couldn’t help but think that Tang Yiran looked adorable at this moment.
What made Derek even happier was that, judging by Tang Yiran’s behavior, Tang Yiran must like him as well.
“I came here tonight to cancel my engagement with Xiao Li.”
Derek didn’t stop to consider how much this decision would affect Tang Li’s current situation.
Under the influence of their highly compatible pheromones, impatience clouded his judgment. He reached out, took Tang Yiran’s hand, and said, “After I cancel the engagement, I hope you’ll agree to marry me, Yiran.”
Lost in his affection for the omega before him, Derek failed to notice the slender young man standing not far behind him.
The young man had an extraordinarily handsome face. Even in the hazy night, he was as striking as a pearl veiled in shadow.
Tang Li suppressed the turmoil surging in his heart and silently observed the scene before him—his former fiancé and his half-brother secretly meeting in the dead of night. Then, with composed indifference, he raised his hands and clapped.
The sudden burst of applause shattered the silence of the night.
Tang Yiran, startled, trembled violently. Losing her balance, she twisted her ankle and fell directly into Derek’s arms.
Derek caught the omega who had thrown himself into his embrace, his expression filled with distress. At the same time, his emerald-green eyes turned cold as he gazed toward the source of the applause.
When he saw who it was, a flicker of surprise and unconcealable embarrassment flashed across his face.
He had never expected Tang Li to discover his secret meeting with Tang Yiran.
For a moment, even the Empire’s formidable Admiral Derek was left speechless.
“Xiao Li, why are you here?”
At that moment, Tang Li noticed something.
Buried in Derek’s embrace, Tang Yiran lifted his head slightly. At an angle Derek couldn’t see, he flashed Tang Li a smug smile.
Then, just as quickly, the expression vanished—replaced by his usual frail, innocent demeanor.
Tang Li immediately understood who had sent the anonymous message tonight.
However, what he hadn’t expected was just how eager Derek was to break off their engagement.
The man who had once pursued him with such devotion—who had acted like a suitor desperate to win his favor—had discarded him so quickly after learning of his disability.
And not only that—he had immediately turned around and proposed to his half-brother.
The reason Tang Yiran had gone through so much trouble to bring Tang Li here was simple—he wanted to see what kind of humiliating expression Tang Li would make upon hearing his fiancé announce he was breaking off their engagement to marry someone else.
After figuring out Tang Yiran’s true intentions, Tang Li’s gaze briefly swept over Derek and Tang Yiran, who were still wrapped in each other’s embrace.
Then, he withdrew his eyes and, as if he didn’t care about the scene unfolding before him at all, slowly said,
“Nothing. I just came to wish you two a happy marriage in advance.”
Although Derek had already planned to break off his engagement with Tang Li, when he saw Tang Li remain utterly indifferent even in the face of this blatant betrayal, he didn’t know why, but—he suddenly felt like a fool.
Before Tang Li became a disabled omega, he had always been the center of attention among all the Empire’s alphas—a precious rose that every alpha longed to claim.
After all, Tang Li wasn’t just breathtakingly beautiful; he had long been identified as having the potential to become a high-level omega.
He was even once rated as the dream omega of all alphas and had countless suitors.
If Derek and Tang Li hadn’t been engaged since childhood, he probably never would have had the chance to be Tang Li’s fiancé.
Because of this, Derek had gone to great lengths to please his future marriage partner.
Yet, Tang Li’s attitude toward him had always been lukewarm at best.
Even though they were engaged, they had never even held hands, let alone—let Tang Li satisfy his normal physiological needs.
So when Derek had needs, he could only secretly seek comfort from other omegas.
Derek looked at Tang Li with a grim expression as he turned and left without a hint of hesitation.
Unable to suppress himself, he blurted out, “Tang Li, have you ever liked me at all?”
“Don’t you think what you’re saying now sounds ridiculous?”
The slender young man paused for a moment but did not turn around.
After leaving behind those cold words, Tang Li walked away without looking back.
Tang Yiran watched as Derek’s gaze remained locked onto Tang Li’s departing figure.
A wave of jealousy rose in his chest.
He was the one who had become an omega with a highly compatible match with Derek—not Tang Li.
Yet, the moment Tang Li appeared, Derek’s attention was completely stolen away.
Tang Li had already become nothing more than a cripple, yet he still carried himself with such arrogance in front of him… Why?!
Now that he had fallen into the mud, Tang Li should have just lain there, looking up at him in defeat!
Tang Yiran watched as Tang Li’s figure disappeared into the distance, his gaze gradually turning sinister.
Tang Li straightened his back and walked past the servants along the way, ignoring their stares.
He knew full well that the moment he passed, they would soon gather and whisper about him behind his back.
The news of his failed attempt to split from the Tang family had already spread through both his household and the entire upper-class social circle.
Everyone was waiting to laugh at his downfall.
But the longer time passed, the more he refused to let anyone see even the slightest sign of weakness.
When Tang Li’s figure vanished from sight, the servants who had been secretly watching him gathered in small groups, just as he had expected.
Their voices dropped to hushed whispers as they began to gossip.
Tang Li didn’t enter his room immediately. Instead, he leaned against the door, reaching into his collar to pull out an oval pendant.
His slender fingers tapped the side of the pendant in a steady rhythm, and soon, a holographic image flickered to life—a breathtakingly beautiful, long-haired female omega appeared before him.
As he gazed at the familiar image, a rare fragility surfaced in Tang Li’s expression.
“…Mom.”
The beautiful female omega looked at him with a soft, gentle gaze. Even though she had been gone for a long time, the love in her eyes remained unchanged, perfectly preserved within the image.
As if drawing strength from that unwavering love, Tang Li felt the weakness inside him gradually fade away.
He carefully retracted the image, cherishingly rubbing the pendant several times before tucking it back into his collar.
Meanwhile, in the living room on the first floor,
Tang Huo greeted Derek, who had just stepped inside with Tang Yiran, a warm smile on his face.
“Admiral Derek, welcome to our home. Dinner is ready—you can enjoy it in the dining room now.”
He had originally assumed that after Tang Li’s failed attempt to split from the family, the engagement between their family and Derek’s would be unilaterally annulled.
But to his surprise, Derek had fallen for his second son instead.
As long as the marriage alliance between the Tang family and the Derek family remained intact, it didn’t matter to Tang Huo which son was involved.
Derek politely greeted Tang Huo and Zhong Chen, who was standing beside him.
“Okay, thank you, Uncle Tang and Uncle Zhong.”
“Don’t be so formal—we’re all family now.”
Zhong Chen looked at Derek with satisfaction, his gaze filled with approval.
After all, this man was about to become his son’s fiancé.
Today was about to become the proudest day of his life.
Soon, he would erase the last shred of glory that the previous mistress had left behind—her son would become nothing more than a complete failure.
The four of them walked toward the dining hall, talking and laughing.
Not a single person remembered to invite Tang Li to dinner.
Or rather, everyone had chosen to ignore him.
“How does he even have the nerve to come to school?”
“Exactly. Our academy is known for recruiting only the most elite omegas in the entire Empire. And he—he’s not even an omega anymore, right?”
“If I were him, I would have dropped out of shame.”
When the slender young man appeared at the door, the once lively classroom suddenly fell silent.
For a brief moment, no one spoke.
Then, whispers erupted.
As they talked, countless eyes—unconcealed in their scrutiny—focused on Tang Li as he walked into the classroom.
Almost everyone’s gaze carried a sense of gloating.
Before his failed differentiation, Tang Li had been an outstanding student, frequently praised by the teachers.
He was also the most sought-after omega in the entire Empire—the one every alpha dreamed of pairing with.
Whenever Tang Li was present, all eyes were on him.
Because of this, there wasn’t a single omega in the academy who wasn’t jealous of him.
And now—the very omega they had envied had become a disabled omega.
When the news first broke, countless omegas laughed so hard in their sleep that they woke up.
Unlike Tang Li, who was now the subject of ridicule, Tang Yiran was basking in admiration.
He had become the center of attention, surrounded by omegas who looked at him with envy.
Even though Tang Yiran and Derek had only gotten engaged last night, the news had already spread like wildfire throughout the upper-class social circles.
“Yiran, the pheromone match between you and Admiral Derek is 86%! You two are simply a match made in heaven.”
The omega who said this spoke loudly, as if deliberately aiming his words at Tang Li as he walked past.
But the handsome, black-haired young man acted as though he hadn’t heard a thing.
Without the slightest change in expression, he simply walked by.
This infuriated the omega who had intended to humiliate him.
As Tang Li passed, Tang Yiran stole a glance at him from the corner of his eye.
When Tang Yiran saw Tang Li carrying the thermal box he brought to school every day, a dark, sinister glint flickered across his eyes.
He quickly concealed the malice within him, then smiled softly and humbly as he said to the omegas surrounding him,
“I’m just lucky. Who would have thought that a detection error—one in a hundred billion—would happen to both me and my brother at the same time?”
By noon, students began making their way to the school cafeteria, chatting and laughing.
Yet, no one spared so much as a glance at Tang Li, who remained seated at his desk.
It was as if he were invisible.
But Tang Li didn’t care.
He simply tidied up his desk, packed his belongings into his bag, picked up the thermal box, and left the classroom.
As he walked through the halls, all kinds of gazes trailed after him.
Some curious.
Some mocking.
But Tang Li paid no attention to them.
He slowly made his way to his usual lunch spot—a vast lake at the center of the school garden.
Scattered across the tranquil waters were floating pavilions, each one small enough to accommodate one or two people.
By now, most students were in the cafeteria, and the pavilion in the middle of the lake was completely empty.
Not a single person was around.
Stepping onto the suspended walkway, Tang Li walked forward and randomly chose a pavilion.
There, he sat down and quietly unpacked the lunch he had brought with him.
Seated in the pavilion, Tang Li quietly opened his thermal box, unaware that not far away, behind a tree near the lake, a figure lay in hiding.
The person’s gaze was locked onto him, filled with malicious intent.
When Tang Li saw the food inside the thermos, his eyes flickered slightly.
Then, as if ice had melted, his expression softened.
Aunt Mei, who prepared his meals, had never treated him perfunctorily just because he was a disabled omega.
Not only were the dishes today richer than usual, but sitting atop his meal was a perfectly poached egg—decorated with a simple smiley face, drawn with ketchup.
A silent gesture of comfort.
A quiet offering of encouragement.
Looking at the small, smiling face, Tang Li couldn’t help but curve the corners of his lips.
A warmth he had long been deprived of slowly spread through his chest.
He picked up his spoon with his slender fingers and, careful not to ruin the delicate smile, placed the food into his mouth—one bite at a time.
The not-so-large thermal box was soon half-empty.
Yet, Tang Li still hadn’t touched the smiling poached egg.
Just as he was about to take another bite, the world in front of him suddenly blurred.
A wave of dizziness washed over him.
His consciousness grew hazy.
The insulated box slipped from Tang Li’s weakening grasp, crashing to the ground.
The fried egg tumbled out, its smiley face—once carefully drawn in ketchup—now reduced to a smeared, blood-red stain on the cold earth.
His vision swayed.
His body felt heavy, his strength rapidly draining away.
Just before his consciousness faded completely, the last thing he saw was a blurred figure—familiar, unmistakable.
Tang Yiran stood over Tang Li’s motionless body, his expression unreadable.
But in his eyes, malice churned like a dark, bottomless swamp.
Had anyone else been present, they would have been terrified—for the hatred in Tang Yiran’s gaze was so intense, so consuming, it was almost impossible to dissolve.
He lowered his eyes and murmured,
“Tang Li, don’t blame me. As long as you exist… I can never feel at ease.”
A moment later, a huge splash shattered the lake’s calm surface.
Then, as if nothing had happened, the stillness returned.
The night swallowed all traces of the crime.
